GADGETS are increasingly fitted with USB-C ports – but what are they?
As Apple shifts to using USB-C ports on more devices, it’s important to know what the connector looks like and where you’ll find it.
What is USB-C?
You’re probably familiar with USB: a type of connector for your gadgets.
Well USB-C is just another type of USB with a different design for the port and connector.
USB-C dates back to 2014, and is now widely used for charging electronic devices and transferring data.
Since then, USB-C has soared in popularity – is very commonly featured on Android devices.
Most modern flagship Android phones use USB-C as their main connectors, and have done for years.
But Apple has stayed using its own Lightning port
Last year, the EU approved a law that required
all new phones, tablets and electronic devices to feature USB-C charging ports.
“By the end of 2024, all mobile phones, tablets and cameras sold in the EU will have to be equipped with a USB Type-C charging port. From spring 2026, the obligation will extend to laptops,” the European Parliament said.
“Under the new rules, consumers will no longer need a different charger every time they purchase a new device, as they will be able to use one single charger for a whole range of small and medium-sized portable electronic devices.”
Speaking to The Wall Street Journal in response to the change, Apple marketing boss Greg Joswiak said: “Obviously we’ll have to comply. We have no choice.”
Is USB-C better?
USB-C can provide higher data transfer rates and faster charging speeds.
And they have a symmetrical design that means that there’s no “right way up” to plug them in.
Importantly, the fact that they are increasingly common means that you’ll be able to use the same cable on more devices in the future.
Which iPhone models use USB-C?
It depends on what you mean.
Currently no iPhone models accept a USB-C connector in the main charging hole.
However that’s expected to change in September 2023 with the launch of the new iPhone 15.
However, iPhones have been using USB-C charging cables for years now.
Apple changed the charging adapter end of its cable to USB-C with the iPhone 11 – although the phone end stayed as Lightning tip.
The iPhone 15 is likely to mark the first iPhone that uses USB-C at both ends of the cable.
Of course, Apple has been using full USB-C cables on other gadgets for years now.
Many MacBook and iPad models use USB-C cables.
