These recipes each serve four people for less than £1.50 per portion.

MEDITERRANEAN CHICKEN AND FETA: This is great for using up vegetables and costs around £1.25 per person.

Chop one large onion, two peppers, three tomatoes and a courgette into decent chunks.

Add any other veg you have lying around, including broccoli or aubergine.

Lay them out on a big ovenproof dish and add a 540g pack of skin-on chicken thighs and drumsticks (£1.90, Sainsbury’s).

Drizzle in olive oil and mix so they are thoroughly coated.

Bake for 20 minutes at 200C.

Mix the veg and flip the chicken, then return to oven for a further 20 minutes until the chicken is cooked through.

Five minutes before end, crumble half a pack of feta (£2.10, Sainsbury’s) over.

SAUSAGE AND PASTA BAKE: This Tesco Real Food adapted recipe is £1.29 per portion.

Squeeze the meat from the skins of a six-pack of sausages and cook on the hob in a casserole dish for seven minutes.

Remove from pan and set aside.

Fry two chopped leeks and two crushed garlic cloves until soft.

Stir the sausage meat back in with a pack of fresh greens, plus three tablespoons of pesto, 200ml of creme fraiche, 300g of penne pasta and 400ml of water.

Cover with foil and bake at 190C for 35 minutes.

Remove foil, stir and add chunks of mozzarella, then bake for 15 minutes longer.

SWEET POTATO AND BLACK BEAN BAKE: Adapted from Gousto, less than £1 a serving.

Peel two sweet potatoes and chop into chunks along with one red pepper.

Drain two tins of black beans and mix with the veg.

Add two teaspoons each of paprika and cumin and bake at 200C for 25 minutes until potato is soft.
