Coronation Street viewers got their first glimpse of him during Monday’s episode, when he heard Paul talking about his MND battle on the radio.

But tonight he arrived on the Cobbles seeking out ex-wife Bernie Winter, who was shocked to see him suddenly in front of her.

Trying to get rid of him as quickly as possible, Bernie lied and told Denny that Paul was already dead, and that the radio interview had been pre-recorded.

But Denny soon found out the truth as he turned up at Paul’s flat before begging his son to go for a chat over a cuppa.

However, that was code for pint, as he took Paul to the Rovers where he started knocking back the drinks.

Paul also indulged in some booze and the tension soon eased between them.

But after Paul accidentally knocked a drink over and the glass smashed on the floor, landlady Jenny Connor suggested it was time to go home.

Once back at the flat with his dad, Paul’s husband Billy and Bernie were shocked to see him drunk, before berating Denny for getting him into such a state.

Denny tried to brush their criticism off, insisting he was just helping his son have fun while he still could, but then Paul vomited on himself, causing concern for his mum and husband.

Denny made a quick exit, but going after him, Bernie demanded: “Why have you come crawling out of the woodwork all of a sudden?”

Her ex insisted it was so he could spend time with his son while he still had the chance, but she wasn’t buying it at all.

She said: “You see the thing is, I know you…”

But she was stopped in her tracks as Denny viciously interrupted as he came towards her and said: “And I know you, a lot better than Paul and Gemma do, obviously.

“Now they might think I’m a terrible parent but I’ve got nothing on you.”
