Where is Craigowan Lodge?

Craigowan Lodge is situated on the Balmoral estate in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

The beautiful stone residence is just one mile away from Balmoral Castle.

Although sometimes described as a cottage, the house boasts seven bedrooms.

Although the estate is owned by the monarch, it is managed by Trustees under Deeds of Nomination and Appointment.

Who lives in Craigowan Lodge?

King Charles inherited the lodge in September 2022 following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II.

Criagowan Lodge was often used by the Queen in the first few days of her annual summer holiday spent in Scotland.

It is said that the late Queen used to stay in the private lodge while Balmoral Castle was being prepared for her extended stay over the summer.

The lodge is located on the edge of a forest and is said to be a particularly calm and quiet spot.

It is said to be surrounded by trees and not far from the village of Crathies.

Charles and Princess Diana often stayed at the lodge when they visited Balmoral while married.

The couple are thought to have stayed in the lodge shortly before their wedding in 1981 and their first official photos following their engagement were taken there.

Craigowan was held in high regard by the Queen, who also spent time at the lodge after the death of her husband Prince Philip.

According to royal author Katie Nicholls, the Queen and Prince Philip cherished the time they were able to spend with William and Harry on the Balmoral estate.

It is also said that the Queen invited Prince Harry and Megan to stay at the Lodge.

In 2022, it was reported that a lift had been fitted at the property, as the Queen intended to spend more time up in the Highlands.

Princess Eugenie spoke in an ITV documentary in 2016 about Craigowan Lodge and the late Queen’s love for it: “It’s the most beautiful place on earth.

“I think Granny is the most happy there.

“I think she really, really loves the Highlands,”

Can you visit Craigowan Lodge?

Craigowan Lodge is not open to the public, unlike many other royal castles and residences.

It is instead a private home that can be enjoyed by the Royal Family.

It is also used by the royals to welcome any important guests.

The Queen often stayed at the lodge before the end of the tourist season before taking up her residence at Windsor Castle.

The Balmoral estate grounds and gardens are to the public daily from 10 am until 5 pm, from April 1 until July 31.

From winter 2023, the grounds are now open to the public on certain dates.

Admissions are free of charge and there is no need to book.
