Three great ways to carve off costs on your Sunday roast

INFLATION has sent the price of a Sunday roast soaring.

According to grocery delivery service, Getir, meat, vegetables, gravy and Yorkshires now cost on average 13 per cent more than a year ago.

But there are some easy ways to carve off costs.

COOK CLEVER: Cooking a roast in the oven is the most expensive method at 17p an hour.

Slow cookers are perfect for cheaper cuts of meat such as brisket or pork shoulder and cost less than a penny an hour to operate.

Microwaves are a cheap option for cooking veg.

Try slicing carrots, a dash of honey and knob of butter in a microwave safe dish and putting them in the microwave until cooked through.

BUY A BUNDLE: Look out for roast dinner bundles.

You can currently get a £15 deal at Ocado with a main, four side dishes and a dessert, saving up to £11.80.

Spend £12 on the Aunt Bessie’s deal at Iceland on a joint of meat and three sides or desserts and you can save yourself up to £3.95.

You can also put your own bundle together from the best value products.

At Tesco, by filling your basket with Aldi price match items, you can get a chicken, three veg and gravy for around £6.50.

SHOP SAVVY: Make some simple roast swaps to save money. A beef brisket is £9 per kilo at Morrisons compared to £13.50 per kilo for a beef topside joint.

You could swap a pricey pork loin for a shoulder joint.

Check for deals first. At Sainsbury’s right now, a whole leg of lamb is

£13 per kilo while a lamb shoulder is £10.20.

But if you have a Nectar card, the leg is half price, bringing it to £6.50 a kilo — better value than the usually cheaper cut.

Asda has a great deal on a pork leg joint, taking it from £5.90 for 950g to £3.95.
